Expanded Childcare Entitlements Now Live

The government's expanded childcare entitlement programme reached its final rollout phase in April 2025. All working parents of children aged 9 months to 4 years are now eligible for 30 hours of funded childcare per week during term time — up from the previous 15-hour universal entitlement. This represents a substantial benefit for working families, potentially worth thousands of pounds per year depending on local childcare rates.

Eligibility requires each parent (or the sole parent in a single-parent household) to earn at least the equivalent of 16 hours per week at the National Minimum Wage, which for 2025/26 means a minimum income of roughly £10,158 per year. Critically for high earners, neither parent's adjusted net income can exceed £100,000. This creates a sharp cliff edge: a family where one parent earns £100,001 loses the entire entitlement. For those near this threshold, pension contributions and salary sacrifice arrangements are among the mechanisms that can reduce adjusted net income, which may affect eligibility.

The practical value of this entitlement is significant. At an average hourly childcare rate of £6–£8 across England, 30 funded hours per week over 38 term-time weeks equates to a benefit worth between £6,840 and £9,120 per child per year. For families with two or more pre-school children, the financial impact of keeping adjusted net income below £100,000 through pension contributions may be significant relative to the childcare benefit gained. It is also important to note that the entitlement covers the base rate only; providers may charge supplementary fees for meals, consumables, and additional services.
